The Orchard Project @ Lupton House

Lupton House is nestled in acres of magnificent Heritage Park land, part of which there are four acres of ancient orchards that have been in residence for approximately 100 years and such a beautiful resource needs to be managed in order to survive the next 100 years.
It is a truly inspiring place, peaceful and holistically restorative, thriving with biodiversity and an abundance of flora and fauna distinct to the South Devon countryside. We will transform them into a true community asset, a safe place where community groups can be inspired to socialise, challenge their physical abilities and learn about growing and protecting the natural environment. We are keen to ensure effective practice and provision that promotes social, mental and emotional well-being alongside environmental education.
A key part of the ethos and vision is to provide accessible learning and a key community resource across all age groups and abilities. We aim to share the health, social and educational benefits of the orchards by encouraging the community to get involved in the management, maintenance and development of these historical orchards, whilst also developing a community space offering a range of courses in environmental skills and an area for relaxation, mental refreshment and exercise. This will be a fully inclusive community development project to help increase engagement with nature and provide somewhere for both adults and children to belong and have purpose and opportunity to realise their potential.
Volunteers will to improve access to the site, maintain the trees and gather the fruit tree crops. We will to make the most of the wider
community’s collective skills and experience by providing meaningful and progressive volunteer opportunities.
We will to offer courses in apple tree pruning, apple identification, Green Working, wood whittling, jam and chutney making, forestry skills, horticulture.
We will open up the space to local community groups for social and mental well-being. We will offer cookery courses with the produce from the community garden to help develop and encourage healthy eating across the community groups.
We will offer community days for people to come and explore the orchards
There is an established Bee hive project within the orchards. We will work with the owner to educate people, volunteers and the community about the importance of Bees.
We need £10,000 to purchase
Tools and a large container to store them, in order to maintain the fruit trees.
